How to Play Spades Online
Spades is one of the most popular trick-taking card games in the world. Played with a standard 52-card deck by four players in fixed partnerships (you and your partner sit across from each other), the goal is to accurately predict how many tricks your team will win each round, then execute your strategy to meet - but not exceed - that bid.
The Rules
Each round begins with dealing 13 cards to each player. After looking at your hand, you bid the number of tricks you expect to take (0–13). Your partner also bids, and your team's total bid is the target. Special bids include Nil (you bid zero tricks - risky but worth +100 if you succeed, -100 if you fail) and Blind Nil (bid zero before seeing your cards - +200/-200).
The player to the dealer's left leads the first trick. Players must follow the led suit if possible. If you can't follow suit, you may play any card - including a spade. Spades are always trump and beat any non-trump card. The highest card of the led suit wins the trick unless a spade was played, in which case the highest spade wins.
Spades cannot be led until they've been "broken" - played on a non-spade trick because a player couldn't follow suit. The exception: if your hand contains only spades, you may lead them.
Scoring
- If your team meets its bid: bid × 10 points + 1 point per overtrick (bag).
- If your team fails its bid: -bid × 10 points.
- Accumulating 10 bags results in a -100 point penalty, and the bag count resets.
- Nil made: +100 points. Nil set: -100 points (partner's bid scored separately).
- Blind Nil made: +200. Blind Nil set: -200.
First team to reach 500 points wins. If both teams cross 500 in the same round, the higher score wins.
Strategy Tips
- Count your tricks honestly. Overbidding leads to penalties. Underbidding piles up bags.
- Lead with your off-suit winners first (Aces and Kings of non-spade suits) before drawing out trumps.
- Track played cards. Knowing which spades and high cards are gone helps you decide when to play aggressively.
- Cover your partner. If your partner bids Nil, lead low cards in their weak suits to help them avoid winning tricks.
- Bags matter. Getting 9 bags feels fine - until that 10th bag costs you 100 points. Plan your plays to avoid unnecessary overtricks.
