How to Play Pitch (Setback)
Pitch (also called Setback or High-Low-Jack) is a fast, competitive 4-player partnership trick-taking game. Each round, players bid for the right to name trump, then play 6 tricks. Up to 4 points are awarded each round: High (highest trump played), Low (lowest trump played), Jack (who captures the Jack of trump), and Game (most game points from face cards). First to 21 wins.
Rules
Deal 6 cards to each player. Starting left of dealer, bid 2-4 (or pass). Highest bidder names trump and leads. Must follow led suit if possible. Trump beats non-trump. After all tricks, award High, Low, Jack, Game points. If the bidding team doesn't make their bid, they're "set back" by the bid amount.
Strategy
- Bid conservatively. Getting set costs you your bid as negative points.
- Lead trump early to flush out opponents' trump and protect your Jack.
- Count game points. Face cards (A=4, K=3, Q=2, J=1, 10=10) determine who wins Game.
