How to Play Chinese Checkers

Chinese Checkers is a classic strategy board game played on a star-shaped hexagonal board. Despite its name, the game originated in Germany in the 1890s and was marketed as "Stern-Halma." It became widely known as Chinese Checkers in the United States due to marketing that evoked an exotic appeal. The game is beloved for its simple rules and deep strategic possibilities.

The Board

The board is shaped like a six-pointed star, with each point forming a triangular "home" zone. In the two-player version, you use two opposite triangles. Each player has 10 marbles in their home triangle at the start. Your goal is to move all 10 marbles into the opposite triangle - your opponent's home - before they do the same.

Moving Your Marbles

On your turn, you may move one marble in two ways. A step move means moving to any adjacent empty hole. A hop means jumping over a single marble (yours or your opponent's) to the empty hole directly beyond it. Chain hops are allowed: if after a hop you can hop again, you may continue in the same turn. You cannot combine a step and a hop - each move is either all steps (just one step) or a sequence of hops.

Winning the Game

The first player to get all 10 marbles into the opposite triangle wins. In our simplified two-player version, you play against the computer. The AI uses different strategies based on difficulty: Easy makes mostly random moves, Medium evaluates positions and prefers advancing marbles, and Hard looks several moves ahead to block you and race toward the goal.

Strategy Tips

Advance your marbles in formation rather than leaving stragglers. Use hops whenever possible - they cover more distance. Chain hops can move a marble across much of the board in one turn. Block your opponent's path when you can. Try to create "ladders" of your own marbles to enable long hop chains. Avoid clustering marbles in the center if it blocks your own progress.
